Creating an open plan kitchen

If you are planning on knocking down some walls to create a larger kitchen, or if you are transforming an extension, an open plan kitchen could be the perfect option. While an open plan kitchen can suit any home, whether its traditional or contemporary, there are some considerations to bear in mind. So what are the factors you should consider when creating an open plan kitchen? And how can you achieve the best possible results?

What are the important considerations for creating an open plan kitchen?

When it comes to creating an open plan kitchen, there are a number of different and important factors to consider. These include:

  • The size and layout
  • Natural light
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Flow and design

The size and layout

While square or rectangular kitchens are popular, you don’t have to follow the same path. Your kitchen could benefit from an unusual layout option, an L or P shape for example. As you are fully renovating, you will have more choice about the size and layout of your kitchen, so make sure you do your research before jumping in.

Natural light

Artificial lighting is important for an open plan kitchen, especially one using zoning, but so too is natural light. In fact you can add a whole new dynamic to your new kitchen by including large windows, roof-lights, or bi-fold doors to the outside. Not only will it look dramatic, it will have the added health benefits that natural light brings.

To make the most of any natural light, choose light coloured, reflective surfaces for your kitchen. In a contemporary home, high gloss cabinets can really emphasise the light, making the space look brighter and more appealing. In traditional kitchens, the light timber and light coloured natural stone can be very effective.

Kitchen cabinets

Its not just the colour of the cabinets you should consider in an open plan kitchen, it is also the size and use of them. Sitting down at the kitchen table to see an untidy kitchen is not a good way to relax and enjoy your food. Instead, make sure your kitchen contains a few innovative storage solutions. These may include:

⦁ pull out larder draws to store spices and jars

⦁ magic corner storage solutions

⦁ drawers inside cupboards for up to 30% more storage

Flow and design when creating an open plan kitchen

When creating an open plan kitchen, it’s also important to consider the flow of the space. Open plan kitchens connect the living room or dining area with the kitchen space, and it’s important that this space flows effectively. As a result, you may need to consider creating zonal areas for different activities in the space. This can be achieved with:

  • A kitchen island- A kitchen island can provide a bridge between the kitchen and the other purposes of the space, allowing the kitchen a degree of separation and creating a clear food preparation and cooking area.
  • The flooring- Choosing a different type of flooring for the different areas of the open plan kitchen zone can be very effective for defining different areas in an open plan space.
