Whether you need a contemporary, or a traditional kitchen style, we have something to suite every home. But one of the most important decisions you will need to make, is the layout of the kitchen itself. Your layout choices will be determined by the size and shape of your room, as well as your personal preference. The U-Shaped kitchen is a popular option for many homes. But what is it? And is it suitable for you? Well, we have produced this guide to U shaped kitchen layouts.

U shaped kitchen layouts

A U shaped kitchen is one that uses three sides of cabinets to create a U Shape. Typically, this is the most common layout to see in a small, square shaped kitchen, or even a rectangular kitchen, depending on the width. However, this layout can also be incredibly effective in large, or medium sized kitchens too.

Practicalities

U shaped kitchen layouts tend to be quite practical, because the space between the fridge, sink and oven is clear, and easy to move between. Also, because the U shaped kitchen tends to be used in small spaces, there isn’t too much distance between these three key points.

Designing U Shaped Kitchens

U shaped kitchens can suit any style kitchen, contemporary or traditional. But if you want to make the most out of this layout option, you need to consider these design choices:

  • use white or pale cabinets- this will help the space feel larger than it truly is
  • choose glossy tiles – these will reflect the light in the kitchen and help it feel more open and airy
  • use open shelves- if it will fit in with your kitchen style, you could keep one wall of cabinets as open shelves. This can help to create more space.
